Job Description

Cemza is seeking a proactive and technically competent Junior Health, Safety and Environmental Officer to join the HSE team at our Gqeberha plant. The role supports the monitoring and reporting of health, safety, and environmental activities, promotes safety awareness across departments, and plays a key role in supporting ISO management systems and compliance with relevant legislation. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in HSE legal frameworks, risk assessments, incident investigation, and capable of confidently communicating with teams at all levels.

Duties & Responsibilties
  • Conduct daily/weekly/monthly HSE monitoring and reporting.

  • Maintain HSE documentation, including audit findings, incidents, near misses, PPE tracking, and summaries.

  • Assist and lead safety audits (statutory, departmental, contractor file reviews).

  • Support incident investigation, report writing, and root cause analysis.

  • Conduct and document risk assessments and FMEA participation.

  • Chair or assist with toolbox talks, inductions, and safety training.

  • Drive environmental compliance including waste tracking and EMPr adherence.

  • Attend daily and review meetings with the HSE Manager.

  • Promote HSE awareness and ensure operational training is carried out.

  • Assist with collections/deliveries for HSE needs (e.g., samples, waste).

  • Ensure legal compliance with OSHA, GSR, NEMA, NEMAQA, and NEMWA.

  • Uphold the requirements of Cemza’s Integrated Management System.

  • Perform any additional duties as required in the interest of the company.

Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a chemical, automotive, construction, or industrial setting.

  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, or similar.

  • SAMTRAC or NEBOSH certification (required).

  • ISO 14001 and 45001 qualification (advantageous).

  • Strong knowledge of applicable HSE legislation.

  • Experience in auditing, risk assessment, and incident investigation.

  • Excellent report writing and analytical thinking.

  • Able to communicate effectively with large groups.

  • Understanding of chemical handling, confined space, and working at heights.

Bonus Points
  • Multilingual communication skills.

  • Confident public speaker and facilitator of HSE workshops.

  • Familiarity with legal registers and internal HSE audits.

  • Experience in emergency planning or environmental sampling.

Package & Renumeration
  • Salary Range: R15,000 – R20,000 per month (negotiable based on experience).
